Slip and falls are a crucial problem.  They are the second leading cause of injuries at work and the leading cause of death for seniors.  In the past focus has always been on the foot and on floor surfaces.  However, as falls continue to increase, focus is now starting to turn to the hand.

As you descend a stair, you only have one point of surface contact at any time, UNLESS you grab the railing.  By holding onto the rail you double your stability and increase your level of balance, greatly reducing the risk of falling. So, knowing that...why are railings and handholds not being used?  Often outside railing is too cold or hot to grasp. Other railing can be slippery at times, especially in wet environments like bathrooms or on boats. In some cases, railing is painted to blend in with the wall and is often ignored, forgotten, or just not seen in a fall situation.

If railing is scorching hot to the touch;  unbearably cold; too icy to grab; or slippery,  the railing can often be a detriment.   Railing is put in place to help us keep our balance and we need to make sure that these handrails can be used adequately.
